How to use the product
HOW TO TIE A WING LEASH KNOT?
Your wing leash can be connected in two different ways: 1. If you have a piece of rope at the end of your leash, create a loop using, for example, the chair knot technique. 2. If the loop already exists, it's taken over with the stitching. Once the loop is OK, pass it through your wing attachment (the small cord located at the portage/freefly handle), then pass your cuff/leash inside this loop to draw it securely onto the leash attachment loop .
HOW DO YOU TIGHTEN THE LEASH ON YOUR ARM? ON WHICH ARM?
Pass the leash attachment through your hand, then tighten so that the loop can no longer pass your hand without cutting off your circulation. There are no precise rules for choosing which arm to put your leash on: right or left. It all depends on your preferences.
INFLATING MY WING:
Make sure the Valve(s) are clean before screwing into the bladder(s), insert valve(s) and firmly tighten.
Close the Dump Valve(s) if these are present, and make sure the hose clip is unlocked if your wing has a 'One Pump System'.
Check the Zip pocket which allows removal of the Leading Edge bladder, is completely closed, before inflating.
Inflate leading edge bladder first - this will feed the boom strut bladder on the 'one pump system', as used on AFS WILF, Diamond V1, D-LITE, WILD, so always just slow pumping at this stage (as the air starts to inflate boom strut) to make sure boom strut bladder inflates forward properly, to meet the leading edge tube (do not be afraid to give a little squeeze around the front of the boom strut to ensure all is correct, before inflating fully)
With the separate leading edge/boom strut inflation valves on the AFS Diamond UL and V2 models, insert valves as above, and inflate Leading Edge to desired pressure, then do the same with the Boom Strut, then, as above, just hesitate while the strut is still quite soft to make sure it has inflated forwards to meet the leading edge BEFORE pumping to desired pressure.
On wings with no dump valves, we recommend you loosen both valves 2 to 3 turns and leave for 2 or 3 mins for pressure to reduce, before undoing and removing valve fully to allow rapid deflation - This is to reduce the likelihood of damaging the first thread in the bladder/last thread on the valve due to the valve being ejected with force by the full pressure setting.
Do not exceed maximum recommended pressure - be aware of the effects of changing weather - from dull to sunny (or from the water to hot beach) can easily over pressure a wing to the point of exploding, just as sunny to dull, or sunny to cold water can reduce pressure, making a wing feel 'dull and soggy', so you may need to check the wing pressure from time to time, especially if on dry land for more than brief periods.
We recommend you do not leave your wing laying in sunshine when not in use, as this produces accelerated ageing of the materials
(Note the original WILF wings had a Max Pressure stated of 6 PSI - This was a miss-print - they should be inflated to 7 PSI, max 8PSI)
HOW TO FOLD MY WING?
Roll the sail starting from the sides, also known as the ears, rather than folding it. This is particularly important if your sail has plastic windows, as folding can create angles that weaken the fabric or plastic of the windows. Once both sides are rolled up, fold the whole assembly starting at the back to expel air from the central batten. Stow the valve in its neoprene protection, then, fold the wing one last time. Make sure you don't 'over fold the wing' if you want to keep it in the best condition for a long time. Finally, put the sail back in its bag.
SHOULD I RINSE MY WING?
Whether in fresh or salt water, we recommend rinsing the wing. It's best to rinse with rainwater, which has less lime scale than tap water. Let your wing dry completely before storing it, to avoid mildew. Don't dry your wing in the sun, as this could prematurely age it. It is also advisable not to hang the wing up to dry or store it, to prevent the bladders from shifting or falling into the leading edge or batten.
